DHS Designates TPS for Nationals of Haiti

On January 15, 2010, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano issued a statement that Haiti will be authorized as a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designated country.

Upon publication in the Federal Register, nationals and country-less habitual residents of Haiti would be eligible to apply for authorized nationals and countryless habitual residents of Haiti to apply for TPS.  TPS designation comes in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12, 2010.  TPS is a humanitarian benefit that allows nationals and certain habitual residents of designated countries temporary refuge and work authorization in the United States.

TPS designation is expected to be announced in the Federal Register on January 21, 2010.
