ICE Announces Suspension of Varick Detention Facility in New York

Category: Immigration News, ICE

On January 14, 2010, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the suspension of immigration detention operations at the Varick Federal Detention Facility in New York, New York.

ICE announced all detainees currently housed at the facility would be moved to a facility in the New York metropolitan area that provides outdoor recreation space and visitation facilities.

The suspension comes in the wake of harsh criticism of the treatment of detainees in immigration detention.  ICE has been accused of failing to meet basic health and safety necessities for detainees in immigration facilities.
